Building Confidence Before Your Boudoir Session – Evansville Indiana Boudoir Photographer
I always say that there are two hurdles to jump over before your session; there’s one when you make the choice to book, and one when you make the choice to show up.
Between those two hurdles, there can be quite a few nerves and butterflies. Even though I take photos all the time, before every session I’ve had I’ve felt nervous at one point or another. It’s so normal to feel a little overwhelmed when you’re thinking about what you’re going to wear, how it’s going to go, and what the photos will look like. All those unknowns can be nerve-wracking, I totally get it. And if you’re anything like me, it can be easy to get in your head about your upcoming session when you start to feel nervous.
I schedule a boudoir session for myself every year so I never forget what it’s like to prepare and be on the other side of the camera, and every time I feel all sorts of nerves. I’ve had fears that I would be uncomfortable, or look awkward, or not feel the best about my body that day. But usually I’m the most nervous that I won’t like how I look in my photos. Allllll of these things are solvable problems, and I’ve found that everyone has a fear about one thing or another regarding their sessions.
That’s why it’s super important to build yourself up and boost your confidence before your session.
Everyone builds confidence in their own ways, whether it’s by putting on their favorite dress and going dancing, or by going to the gym and feeling strong, or by painting their nails and having a #treatyourself moment. Whatever it may be for you, do something that makes you feel more self-love and boosts your confidence before your session rolls around.
The biggest thing that makes me feel more confident before a session is asking questions and getting the full scoop. I’m such an anxious person, especially going into new places or doing new things. I’ve found that asking questions helps ease those fears and helps me feel prepared. Bonus points if my questions are answered before I even have to ask! Although I like to have the answers in writing (because I’m notoriously forgetful) and email is usually my favorite way to communicate, I’ve found that talking on the phone and having the chance to talk through my photographer’s process about what to expect gives me more confidence than just emails.
Something about hearing their voice and being able to actually have a conversation about their process is so helpful for me. This is one of the biggest reasons why I offer free 30-minute consult calls over the phone for all boudoir sessions: to give my clients space to voice any concerns they have, ask any questions that are unanswered, and get to know each other a bit better before their boudoir session! We usually talk about what you’re going to wear (the biggest question of them all), how to do hair and makeup or where to go to have it done professionally, and I always like to spend some time learning what got you interested in boudoir and what you want to get out of your session.
Although having space to ask one million questions and hearing about the process is the most helpful for me, it may not be the most helpful for you. And that’s okay!
In asking my clients questions after their sessions, I saw a pattern that they all have done things to build confidence and make themselves feel more prepared for their sessions. Building confidence can look different for everyone, and what works best for me isn’t guaranteed to work best for you. Whatever you choose to do, I hope it’s something that boosts your confidence and makes you feel like the baddest bitch on the block!
