Choosing a Boudoir Photographer to Safeguard Your Self-Image

Boudoir should be empowering and fun... not leave you feeling let down and unexceptional.

It's so important to vet your photographer before deciding to work with them so that you know exactly what to expect! You want to work with a professional who will provide you with a comfy and confidence/building experience. I’ve heard too many stories from people going to inexperienced or uneducated boudoir photographers just because they don’t β€œcharge an arm and a leg” and leaving feeling disconnected from the experience and themselves.

Literally the exact opposite of what you want from a boudoir session, amiright?

I’ll help you learn how to vet your photographers so you don’t have an experience like this...

I want to give you some questions to keep in mind when looking for a boudoir photographer to safeguard your self image and have the best experience possible.

1. Do you like their photos and how they photograph people?

The first thing you want to do when you’re choosing a photographer is visit their website and their social media to see more of their work. While you’re looking, think about things like their editing style, how they photograph people, the poses you see, and if the people in their photos look comfortable. And make sure to ask your friends who they’ve worked with and liked!

2. Does their work make you feel empowered to show up as you are?

When you’re looking through their photos, do you feel like you could be the people in the photos the way you are? Or do they make you feel like you need to change things about yourself to be in the photos? I think it’s important to work with someone who makes you feel like you can be yourself in front of their lens. Is that important to you too?

3. Do you feel comfortable with them?

This is all about personality and the type of person you want to be around – you want to choose someone who you feel like you can get along with! Read through their about page on their website or look for personal posts on their social media to get a feeling of who they are and decide if they’re the kind of person you vibe with. Not only are you investing in their services, but you’re investing in your time spent with them too which is just as important!

4. Are they conscious of your experience as a client?

A session of any kind is so much more than just showing up and taking photos, but especially when it comes to boudoir. When you’re shopping for a photographer, look for information about the experience you’re investing in. Do they go the extra mile to help you prepare and take care in delivering your photos in a thoughtful way? Do they make sure your questions are answered and you know what to expect from the experience?

5. Are they inclusive of people with bodies and experiences like yours?

This is especially important when it comes to boudoir! If you’re looking at their website or social media, you want to see people who look like you or who have lived experiences that are similar to yours. It’s an added layer of comfort knowing that the person you’re choosing has worked with people like you before. Again, it’s a good idea to ask your friends and see who they recommend!
