Are There Boudoir Prerequisites? — Evansville Indiana Boudoir Photographer
In my years in the boudoir industry, I’ve noticed there’s a misconception that in order to do a boudoir session you have to fit a very narrow profile.
And I think mostly that’s thanks to the types of boudoir images usually found on Pinterest and popular Instagram accounts. That profile goes something like this: young, thin, in a relationship, with a closet full of gorgeous matching lingerie sets and long, flowing hair that’s perfectly curled and a face full of full glam makeup. Does this feel familiar to you too? I don’t know about you, but I feel like that’s a lot of boxes to check… that you don’t have to check. I know that it may feel like we have to fit directly into that teensy tinsy little box is required when in reality not one of those things is required or expected.
There are no prerequisites to meet in order to do a boudoir session.
My clients make it look so easy, but not a single one of them is a model. They’re therapists, social workers, bartenders, nurses, graphic designers, dental hygienists, teachers, students, police officers, retail workers, hair stylists, stay at home moms, small business owners, tattoo artists, YOU NAME IT. There aren’t boxes to check or molds to fit into here. There is no right or wrong way to exist in the world or in your body, and you deserve to be celebrated regardless of how many trips you've made around the sun or how many pounds you weigh. And that sentiment is one that we take as a fact around here.
It makes me feel so disappointed when I hear that someone doesn’t feel like they could do a session because of their age, their weight, their appearance, or their relationship status. You are enough as you are. You don’t need to put off living a life you love because you feel like you need to be something that you aren’t. I don’t want you to put off that best life for one more day, that isn’t fair to you. Whether it’s a boudoir session, a new pair of jeans, a facial, or whatever it may be. We are allowed to enjoy the experience of our lives regardless of what demographics we fall into.
I’ve lived in that place of feeling like the excuses are more comfortable than extending out of my comfort zone to do something I want to do but don’t feel worthy of.
On the other side of that I know that doing something that expands my comfort zone feels so liberating. It makes me feel so powerful to do something that feels hard, even if it’s something as simple as trying a new spot for lunch by myself. Doing challenging things reminds me that I am resilient, I am strong, and that I can not only survive, but thrive, outside my comfort zone. That feels better than that comfortability could ever possibly feel.
I think sometimes we just need a simple reminder that we are in the driver’s seat of our lives.
In my early 20’s I was beginning to learn that I was in the driver’s seat, but I hadn’t quite gotten there yet. I had a habit of just letting things happen to me and taking what I got without much of a fuss, whether it was good or bad. I wish in that time in my life I had someone tell me that I was capable of living the life of my dreams, whether I knew it then or not. I wish someone would have told me that I’m in charge of making choices that serve me, that I don’t have to be stuck in anything I don’t want to be stuck in. Just like I want that for 20 year old Ellie, I want that for you too. I want you to be your own inspiration, whether you’re making a life change, switching up your style, or choosing to invest in a boudoir session. I hope you are your own muse.
